So, you’ve already explored all the night markets in Taipei and Kaohsiung, and now you’re looking for something more. Taichung, Taiwan’s third largest city, is relatively undiscovered by tourists from Singapore, but that just makes it all the more rewarding to travel to.
In Taichung, Singapore visitors will find a charming city that’s more relaxed than the capital but still boasts some of Taiwan’s best travel attractions, food, and shops.
Here are five must-visits on your next visit to Taichung.
Feng Chia Night Market
No visit to Taiwan is complete without binging on snacks at a night market. Feng Chia Night Market in Taichung is a must-visit for its selection of snacks and clothes, as well as the energy that has become a hallmark of Taiwanese night markets.
Taiwan’s night markets are suitable for just anybody. Couples and friends will enjoy the opportunity to share snacks and soak in the bustling, festive atmosphere, while families with kids can easily keep the little ones entertained thanks to the selection of carnival games on offer.

Guguan Hot Spring
Visiting hot springs is a favorite activity of couples in Taiwan, and was popularised during the period of Japanese rule. Gu-Guan Hot Spring, which is located about an hour’s drive from central Taichung, is a great introduction to hot spring culture.
The hot spring offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. If you wish to enjoy the hot springs in the cheapest way, take a day trip from Taichung instead of staying at one of its resorts, and opt for relatively cheap treatments like a foot bath.

Dajia Jenn Lann Temple
Culture buffs will be spoiled for choice when it comes to temples in Taichung. Dajia Jenn Lann is one of the best and most impressive. The temple, which is more than 200 years old, is also one of Taiwan’s most important Matzu temples.
Do as the locals do, and light some incense and ask Matzu to bless you and your travel companions. Remember, however, that it’s no substitute for a good travel insurance policy!

Rainbow Village
Rainbow Village has gained cult status in Taichung for its buildings daubed in bright, psychedelic colors that are sure to delight children.
Rainbow Village was originally a veteran village, which the man now known as Rainbow Grandpa decided to give a facelift by painting it in whimsical colors, and introducing childlike imagery of animals, people and more. Today, it looks more like a fantasy land than or a hippie hideout than a veteran village.

National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts
If you’re traveling solo, there’s nothing quite like whiling the afternoon away at a museum, as you’ll have all the time in the world to pore over exhibits without distraction.
The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts is a good choice, thanks to its plethora of modern art exhibits. It’s also free to visit, which makes your trip to Taichung a bit cheaper.
One of the great things about this museum, which is also one of Asia’s best modern art museums, is that it strikes a good balance between Western art and works by Taiwanese and Chinese artists.
