There’s something for everyone in Sydney. Whether you decide to travel there for the cosmopolitan ambiance, child-friendly attractions or easy access to nature, Australia’s most populous city is one of the best destinations for spending a week (or two, or three) away from Singapore.
For families traveling with kids in tow, there’s no shortage of family-friendly activities to enjoy, such as the following.
Go Hiking in the Blue Mountains
There are many day trips from Sydney, but the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area is one of the easiest to embark on, with several tours departing from the city center daily. This beautiful natural area is enveloped in a blue mist due to oil droplets in the air which scatter primarily blue short-wave light rays.
There are several walking trails of varying levels of difficulty that you can choose according to the age of your kids, one of the easiest being Prince Rock Walk, which is only 1.8 kilometers and offers breathtaking views over several lookouts.
How to get there: A guided tour is the safest and easiest way to explore the Blue Mountains. Tour buses pick you up from the Sydney city center and enable you to see many of the main attractions in and around the Blue Mountains.
Visit the Powerhouse Museum
Address: 500 Harris St, Ultimo NSW 2007, Australia
The Powerhouse Museum is part of the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences in Sydney, but don’t let that rather dry name put you off. It is fantastically well done and contains many exhibits that kids and adults will rave about.
Visitors to the museum can peer through a telescope at the observatory and enjoy exhibits on subjects as diverse as decorative arts, contemporary culture, science, and technology.
How to get there: Take the bus to Broadway bus station (Railway Square), or the light rail to the Exhibition Centre Sydney Light Rail Station.
Say Hello to the Animals at Taronga Zoo
Address: Bradleys Head Road, Mosman, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
There’s nothing quite as exciting to a kid than a day at the zoo. Taronga Zoo is one of the best zoos in Australia. The zoo is home to a wide range of animals from Oceania and Asia, including Australian favorites like the red kangaroo and koala.
For cheap tickets, book online on their website and get up to 20% off. They also have promotions for families comprising two adults and one child or two adults and two children, which is the cheapest option when traveling as a family.
How to get there: Take the Taronga Zoo ferry at Circular Quay’s Wharf 2. Alight at Taronga Zoo Wharf and then take the Sky Safari cable car to Taronga Zoo.
Build Sandcastles at Bondi Beach
Address: NSW 2026, Australia
No visit to Sydney is complete without spending some time at the beach, and the world famous Bondi Beach is the city’s most popular. This gorgeous beach, with its powdery sands and bright blue waters, is nice to visit all year round.
Older kids might enjoy taking a surf class or trying out bodyboarding for the first time. If your kids are younger, they might enjoy building sandcastles or playing a game of frisbee on the sand. Pack some sandwiches and fruit, and you have a recipe for a cheap day out.
How to get there: Catch Bus 380 or 333 at Circular Quay Wharf #2 and alight at Bondi Beach in about 45 minutes.
